The learning and knowledge gained in writing this portfolio will help you in your pursuit of a career or further study. The portfolio is centred on ‘you’ and ‘your knowledge and understanding of leadership. You will write the portfolio in the first person and in a reflective style.

 

  • Section 1: Involves you writing a general introduction to the portfolio with a personal statement about ‘you’;
  • Section 2: This is where you demonstrate your understanding and knowledge of leadership today and the future; incorporating evidence from academics through to leading experts in the field of leadership.  You will have the opportunity to draw on current issues such as leadership and diversity, sustainability and ethics in the workplace.
  • Section 3: Provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your ‘personal development’ reviewing areas such as coaching and mentoring, and using psychometric inventories such as MBTI and Emotional Intelligence.

Section 4: Enables you to draw on your personal experience of leadership as follows:  experience on placement; leadership in a sporting role, leadership at work, leadership in a charity or a student union.  We have an alternative (see below for anyone who has not gained any leadership experience to date).

Task 1: Preparing

  1. Attending the ‘lectures and tutorials’ to obtain a clear understanding of leadership theory in practice.
  2. Reading: ‘relevant’ journal papers and reliable news articles on the different approaches and views on leadership (NOT relying on the unit textbook).
  3. Watching and listening to podcasts, videos and TED talks lectures to understand the meaning of leadership from different perspective.

Task 2: Writing – (5000 +/-words maximum)

  1. Use clear headings and subheadings if needed throughout the portfolio.
  2. Font size: 12pt – (Calibri)
  3. Start with a 250-300 word introduction to the portfolio – introducing your portfolio and explaining what you are proposing to cover, followed by a personal statement (writing about yourself, skills and interests.
  4. The portfolio main tasks are divided into various sections and sub sections, which will required around 5000 words to be covered. (details in the following section)
  5. Bibliography / Reference section (identifying all the sources you have cited in your report using Harvard reference style).
  6. Appendix, you are required to add some elements, presentation slides and personal tests into this final section.
