The assessments are outlined in the Document "CPCCBS6001 Construction Materials Res V2 ASS18.pdf" In this unit, you will prepare research reports containing research findings, recommendations and supporting evidence for each of three different buildings. An important component of your role as a building surveyor will be to continually inform yourself of industry practice and emerging materials and methods of construction. There is so much information available that you cannot expect to know it all. You will need to have well developed research and interpretation skills so that, when confronted with building proposals, you will have the skills to find and understand how, when and where the proposed building materials and methods are appropriate and when they are not. The purpose of the following assessment exercises is to test your understanding of construction methods and materials and your capacity to inform yourself as issues arise. In Assessment Tasks 2, 3 and 4, you will be asked to prepare research reports on particular classes, and combination of classes, of buildings. You will find that some aspects of building materials and methods are similar for several or all building classes. Some materials and methods will be different, depending on the building class but also depending on other site specific conditions such as: the location, climate and land stability. The correct identification of building classifications is a fundamental skill to be mastered by any building surveyor. It forms the basis of every building assessment. The demands of assessments 2, 3 and 4 are quite similar. However, you will see that there can be important differences in the requirements for different building applications. Not all building scenarios are covered. You will need to refer frequently to BCA Volume 2, particularly Section 3 Acceptable Construction in order to complete the assessments in this unit. The BCA is the foundation document in your work through this course. It will become your constant companion through the course and in your professional career in building control. It is not practically possible to memorise the BCA. You will need to refer to it often so it is best to have a sound understanding of how it is structured and how you can readily access the information that it offers you .
