In preparing for your Essay 3, it is important to get a good handle on the rhetorical strategies of concession and refutation. Our book discusses “Rebuttals” which are quite similar to “Refutations”, but since it does not mention “Concessions,” this short assignment requires to look elsewhere.

Then practice these strategies as follows:

In 2-3 sentences respond to the article “The Tyranny of Happiness” by expressing your own opinions about the topic of the article.
Write a paragraph refuting one of Elliott’s claims, supplying evidence of your own in your refutation.
Write a paragraph conceding one of Elliot’s claims, then explain why your stance is the more convincing one despite your concession.
