Order instructions
You have been hired by a merchant that sells jewelry at the Farmer’s Markets and various Craft Fairs.
While sales have been good, they are limited to weekends during the summer months and 7-8 well
attended Fairs throughout the year. Word-of-mouth has provided some business during the slow time,
but it is a “feast and famine” phenomenon.
It is believed that creating a good website will help bring in more consistent sales while still doing the
circuit of Markets and Fairs. However, the jewelry items are unique and sell from several hundred to
even thousands of dollars! Hence, a poorly designed website will not reflect the quality of the products
being sold.
There are lots of options like creating an Etsy shop, eBay, Shopify, etc. Etsy was determined that the
store could become lost in all like jewelry shops and lose to cross-selling. eBay and Amazon seemed to
lose the personal touch despite having a large traffic base (more for high volume selling). Finally, Shopify
seemed promising, but only having the ability to sell in one currency (CAD) and to use Canada Post for
shipping seemed limiting to customers outside of Canada.
After the initial research it was determine that Shopify.ca will be setup for the client. To address the
short-comings of Shopify, the following services will be added:
 UPS – improve international delivery
 WPML – display multiple currencies
 Square – integrate inventory of online & physical sales and to provide a better mobile solution
for handling credit cards.
The Jeweller wants to know how much will a site cost to setup and having training to be able to maintain
the site with limited support.
Scope
It is decided initially that the store will offer 3 category of products:
 Rings
 Bracelets
 Necklaces
In each category, there is 10-12 items to develop a product page. In addition, there will be an About,
FAQ, Custom Design, Blog, and Gallery (20 Past Pieces) pages.
Amount of Effort
Armed with this knowledge, you have gone out to ask the support staff at your firm to understand the
tasks needed to complete this project. You do not have every single task identified, so you will have to
make some assumptions and determine what additional items are needed. As Project Manager, you are
expected to develop the project schedule (Gantt chart) and the cost for all the resources (people,
software, and materials).
Lab Assignment 4: MS Project
As a business, it is important to make a profit and have a buffer for the unexpected, so generally a 50%
mark-up is added before presenting to the client. In addition, there’s an additional 10% that is paid after
the project to retain the team for one year support to your client. Please include all these amounts.
The break-down of resource costs are in the table below.

Website Developer
Carlie Gill has mentioned there are many tasks to make this website happen:
 Register a domain name
 Setup the website settings
 Install the various plug-ins
 Work closely with Graphic Designer and Database Administrator
She estimates that it will take about a 1-2 weeks just to get the structure of the website up and running.
Digital Marketing Specialist
Mila believes she won’t have much to do until some content has been created and the site is in draft
form. At which point she can start engineering the SEO strategy and work with some potential sites to
help drive traffic. She estimates about 20-30 hours optimizing meta tags and about 40-60 hours
developing a social media campaign with Facebook and Snapchat.
Mila Mcintyre will have to work with the Technical Writer to ensure the copy reflect the keywords and
work with the Graphic Designer to create a consistent brand feel.
System Administrator
Reed Horton will not have too much direct work on this project as the solution is hosted by another
company (Shopify), but will be available as the “go to” resource for technical information and to be the
Lab Assignment 4: MS Project
liaison to Shopify when there are issues. He is a good resource to include in any technical meeting
getting this project off-the-ground.
Graphic Designer
Paityn Carrillo will be involved through most of this project as she is responsible for the site’s “look-andfeel”.
Here are a few of the tasks she will be responsible for:
 Creating a custom theme
 Developing graphic elements (logo, icons, etc.)
 Ensure the colour palate is consistent
 Navigation of the site
 Etc.
Database Administrator
Cannon Mcdowell is not heavily involved as much of the site data needs is handle through the Shopify
website builder, but integrating the inventory between Shopify (online) and Square (physical) is
important. The site needs to properly reflect the current inventory whether an item has been sold online
or at a Market. This will need to be tested and likely some development on creating some type of real
time messaging solution. Cannon will work with the Website Develop for this solution. This is an
unknown and could be as simple as 1 day to a full week.
Technical Writer
Deshawn Shelton will need to create the text for the site which include all the pages mention above and
each product page of the catalogue. Typically it takes Deshawn about 2-5 hours per web page (roughly
350 words) depending on the complexity of the communication. The writing is more effective if he
spends a bit of time talking with the Jeweller (client) about the content to present. Hence, 1-2 days
interviewing the Jeweller and several follow-ups throughout the project.
Photographer
Phoebe Berger will make sure the photos pot from the website to make people want to buy the jewelry.
She will need to bring the products into the studio to setup with lighting, different background, and
multiple angles. Shots can be anywhere from 1-2 hours for one great photo and another 1-2 hours for
post development work through Photoshop.
QA Analyst
Brisa Mcgrath is to ensure that everything is correct on the website, so she will edit the text, check the
navigation, and make sure the functionality works. Brisa is a stickler for detail and drives everyone nuts,
but nothing gets by her and everyone respects her pestering in every task. She has
Integrity Testing
Throughout the project, Brisa is checking out the development and checking for quality.
Unit Testing
Creates scripts to run through all the possible site functionality in various approaches. Then runs
multiple times through the scripts to see if the site can be broken. Scripts take 2-3 days to setup and
about a week to run. If there are problem (usually the case) then Brisa will work with the team to isolate
and then re-run those scripts to ensure the problem has been fixed.
Lab Assignment 4: MS Project
Stress testing
Creates a few scenarios of high site demand (i.e. multiple people ordering simultaneously, or browsing
the same item, etc.) and have everyone perform these scenarios for an full afternoon with pizza as the
reward if the site survived or dinner for the technical team (Website Developer, Database Administrator
and System Administrator).
Office Assistant
Last, but not least… Bria Marshall is the person to run errands and odd jobs while the team is work on
their area. She fills the needed gaps that is always forgotten, but crucial to get a task complete. Tasks
like grabbing the products to be photographed from the Jeweller and returning them, setting up
appointments, researching products and pricing, etc. She is the glue of the team and makes sure
everything is in-place when needed. Some believe she is psychic.
Deliverable as Project Manager (Assignment Instructions)
Using the information above, you need to identify the following:
Project Charter (this is internal)
 Estimate the length of the project
 Show a Gantt chart with a start date of 31-July 2017
 Provided estimated project cost
 Project assumptions
Project Estimate (for the client)
 Determine the price to charge the client
 Determine the first year support price
 Schedule of when you will need the Jeweller to be available
 Project completion date
Be conservative in your estimates and document all areas where you made assumptions and of course
be sure to include the checking of those assumptions in your project plan (review testing results, etc.)
The above is actually 2 separate documents, but only submit one PDF in D2L and separate the 2 sections
with a page break and label accordingly.
Grading Criteria
This is the last lab assignment and consists of 4 criteria:
Format How well did you put all of this together?
Completeness Did you capture most of the important tasks and milestones?
Accuracy How accurate are the costs and the timeline?
Timeliness 4 points if completed by end of day Friday. Each additional day is -1 mark.
Excellent is 4 points, Good is 3 points, OK is 2 points and Poor is just 1 point. This is the forth lab
assignment with the quiz on lab day – now worth 16 points if you completed it (increased from 10
points). This works out to 4 lab assignments for a total of 64 possible points that is 15% of your grade.
