Jonathan, aged 33, has a history of manic depression and has received treatment in the past as a compulsorily detained patient. He lives with his mother, who is diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia and regularly fails to take her medication. Jonathan is found in the town shopping centre, dressed in pyjamas and acting in a bizarre fashion, shouting at passers-by and threatening to throw himself off a balcony. The police are called and take him to the hospital. An approved mental health professional with no previous knowledge of Jonathan is called to the hospital and met by a consultant psychiatrist who instructs the AMHP to do the necessary paperwork, saying that the only way forward for Jonathan is a course of ECT. At the same time, Jonathan’s mother appears and insists that if he comes home she will take care of him. Consider the steps the AMHP could take.
