On a fl ight from Chicago to Spokane, Washington, the pilot learned shortly after takeoff that two pets—a golden retriever and a cat—had mistakenly been loaded into an unheated cargo compartment. Knowing that when the plane reached 30,000 feet temperatures in the unheated portion of the cargo bay would drop to 55 degrees below zero and the pets would die, the pilot dumped 16,000 pounds of jet fuel worth about $2300 and made an emergency landing at a nearby airport. The pets arrived safely, but the human passengers were delayed by about two hours. Did the pilot do the right thing? Why, or why not?
