In a dyad with someone you do not know well, explore the following areas by interviewing one another on any or all of these eight topic areas: the story of your name, your family of origin experience (i.e., holiday celebrations, fun activities, ancestors coming to this country), your educational story, your employment history, your religious history, your greatest success story, your experiences in being different from others, and your strengths in working with individuals different from you. Discuss these areas within the context of substance use (i.e., how the use of substances impacted your education, employment, etc.). This is an exercise that can also be used in counseling sessions (individual, couple/family, group).
