In video role play 4, Counselor Competence: Dealing With Delusions, the counselor (Suzanne) recognizes that she is beyond her level of competence and considers referral of a client (LeAnne) who appears to be delusional. When LeAnne reveals that others are following her, the counselor expresses her concern and attempts to convince the client to see a more qualified professional. LeAnne is not responsive to this suggestion and feels that Suzanne can help her. As a counselor, what do you think you would do in a similar situation? How might you respond if your client flatly refuses the idea of a referral? Would you be inclined to continue seeing a client if you thought you were not competent to counsel this person, even though your client says you are helping her? Discuss in small groups your thoughts about making a referral when you lack competence.
