You are enrolled in an internship with a small county sheriff ’s office, and after several weeks you begin to develop close friendships with some of the deputies. Eventually you learn that nearly all of the deputies are very disgruntled—and some are even irate—due to what they perceive as a lack of parity with other intracounty offices and intercounty sheriff ’s offices in wages and benefits, and general apathy by the county commission. They perceive a danger exists because low salaries lead to high turnover, which causes too few deputies—and too many inexperienced ones—to normally be on duty per shift. A deputy asks you if it is legally possible in your state for them to align themselves with a labor union, as well as your overall opinion concerning the pros and cons of collective bargaining and whether or not a “peaceful protest” by sheriff ’s personnel and their families and supporters at the county commission offices might help. What is your response?
