In Kwame Anthony Appiah’s “Making Conversation” and the “Primacy of Practice,” we saw that people have different reasons for doing things based on logic, instinct, religion, or custom. In “The Primacy of Practice,” Kwame describes several examples of customs and habits across the world to explain how customs change as a result of interactions across group boundaries, whether the groups are cultural or national. However, in Manuel Muñoz’s op-ed article “Leave Your Name at the Border,” we see that the way customs and habits change as a result of interactions across group boundaries can cause significant confusion or tension in people’s ways of being. This potentially causes cultural loss and/or the inability to sustain more than one way of being.
In an attempt to evaluate what this loss or inability could mean for groups of people and society, write a paper in which you analyze the costs and benefits of assimilation using ideas and support from Appiah and Muñoz, and your own experiences.
Questions for Consideration:
What is meant by “Way of Being?” What is lost when a person or culture assimilates? What is gained? Is assimilation worth it? If so, why? How can groups assimilate while maintaining their unique identities? What is the difference between integration and assimilation?
