In this assessment task, you will develop the following learning outcomes:
- Compare and contrast business practices and creative, conceptual practices in communication design.
- Critically reflect upon the implications of social, economic and cultural issues, including sustainability, for the future of design industries.
- Acquire and apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary practice in your field.
- Critically reflect on your own work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgment and ethical responsibility.
Again taking one of the weekly themes as a starting point, you must, for this assessment task, write an essay that considers the relationship between the commercial and social considerations that affect or inform communication design, with a focus on future practices, sustainability and ethical responsibility. You are asked to approach this by studying a work of design, or multiple works of design, or a designer’s practice as a whole, with reference to the historical precedents and the theoretical perspectives covered in lectures in this module. You must also reflect on your own work in relation to these precedents.
Selection of case or cases
A list of suggested works is provided, but you may depart from this list and discuss a designer or a work of design of your own choosing, in consultation with teaching staff. You may discuss a single work or a single designer, but a comparative analysis of multiple works or of multiple designers’ practices is also an option.
Suggested essay structure
You may structure your essay however you please, but a possible structure is provided here, which you may choose to use.
- Introduction (250 words): Give a brief description of your chosen work or works of design (what is it, who made it, when and how was it made?).
- Section 1 (500 words): Explain the intention behind the work(s) or practice(s) — is it (or are they) commercial in focus, or non-commercial, critical, conceptual or socially-minded, or some combination? In other words, what is the relationship between your chosen design(s) and society?
- Section 2 (500 words): Discuss your chosen works in relation to relevant theories, and local and international perspectives on practice. Discuss how your chosen work(s) of design relate to the ideas proposed in the suggested readings for your theme, and other relevant texts.
- Section 3 (500 words): Critically analyse your chosen works with regard to sustainability and ethical responsibility. What issues arise? Critically reflect on your own work or your perspective of the design industry: how does your own work or perspective relate to the works you are studying here?
- Conclusion (250 words): Summarise your principal findings and argument(s).
