Learning Objectives: to use the internet to research specific information about an element of choice on the
periodic table.
Background Information:
The internet has so many sources of information out there for people to learn from. Some material is
accurate while others are inaccurate. Sometimes we even find contradictory information. Choose any
element on the periodic table except for the Uu* elements as there is little about them right now. Use the
internet to perform some research on it using the following questions to help guide you. Write a 1-2 page
report on the element you choose incorporating the information that answers the questions. Make sure you
don’t just answer the questions and turn in this sheet!
Useful places to look include the internet web search on your element as well as a starting point maybe using
the links… www.webelements.com, www.chemicalelements.com, www.periodicvideos.com
1. When was your element discovered? (you may or may not find this)
2. Where was your element mainly found (city, states, country, continent, etc)?
3. What is the physical description of your element?
4. How many isotopes exist for your element? What are they? Do they have any use? Ex. In the medical field
they maybe used for tumor detection.
5. Is your element poisonous/toxic or safe?
6. Does your element have a nickname?
7. What type of compounds does your element make?
8. Does your element come from an Ore? (If you have chosen a gas, you will not have an ore.) What is/are
the ore name(s)? How is this ore refined?
9. What are some of today’s costs for this refined material? (If you have problems here we can use a
chemistry catalog for the current prices.)
10. What are some commercial uses for your element? Please list any compound related the commercial use.
11. Please list your sources used…ex. Websites or books looked at.
