In the textbook, read pages 400-418. This is in the back of the book “Appendix: Interviewing.”
The main pages to read for the assignment are pages 410-417. Look at page 410 regarding tailoring your cover letter and your resume. Note the chronological resume on page 411. You do not have to include “Professional Objective” on the resume but you may if you would like to do that. You must have your name, address, email, and cell phone number on the resume. You want the employer to contact you for that interview!
Note the sample cover letter on page 413. In this example, the Tower Place, Cincinnati, Ohio address would be your address with the date. The other is the name of the person you are writing to and the company name and mailing address. Then you double space and write, “Dear Ms. Smith:” notice you use a : not a comma. Then you have the body of the cover letter and you finish it with “Sincerely,” and type your name.
If you don’t have your textbook you can still do the assignment. Read the following and look at the examples posted in modules.
A cover letter is a short well-written letter expressing your interest in a position at a company and piquing curiosity about why your application materials deserve a closer look.
A resume is a summary sheet highlighting your related experience, education, skills, and accomplishments. Most resumes use a chronological format which means you list your education, jobs, and accomplishments in reverse chronological order. The most recent education, work, and activities are listed first. For example, at Education you would put your Jackson State University information, then your community college, then high school information. (If you did not attend a community college, put JSU then high school information.)
You should consider any volunteer work you have done in college or high school, any babysitting, yard work, or church work. It does not matter if you were paid or not, it counts when considering experience for a job.
You are to type a cover letter and a resume and submit them for up to 100 points each at the appropriate submission area. I will grade the cover letter and the resume for correct spelling, grammar, and word usage.
