Is Space Exploration too Costly?

Since the beginning of the space era, it has been argued that the money spent on space exploration should rather be used on meeting the needs of the underprivileged and developing nations.

Martin Luther King once stated in one of his famous speeches  “if our nation can spend thirty-five billion dollars a year to fight an unjust, evil war in Vietnam, and twenty billion dollars to put a man on the moon, it can spend billions of dollars to put God’s children on their own two feet right here on earth”.

People like Martin Luther King may not have been opposed to exploring space, however, was debating about our priorities here on Earth.  Some people strongly believe that space exploration is important beyond just curiosity, but for our self preservation and the future of the earth.

The debate still exists –  Is space research/exploration worth pursuing when money is so badly needed in many places here on earth or is space research/exploration necessary for the future of the earth and all of the people living on it?
