The powerpoint and accompanying script is due the day before the last day of class.
Each student will be assigned a country. The countries will be small to medium-size
countries that have achieved at least a degree of success in economic development.
Students should examine the following:
- Form of government,
- GDP per capita as it has evolved since WWII or independence or some other good
“beginning” date,
- Civil liberties (such as freedom of speech and the rights of the accused),
- Economic freedom,
- Transparency (or its opposite, corruption),
- Violence/personal security,
- Economic openness and trade policy,
- Currency and banking, and
- Participation in economic associations such as the WTO, customs unions and free
Trade agreements.
Students may describe cultural, geographic and other factors that might be related to, or
an interesting part of the country’s economic development. Use of tables, charts and
images is encouraged. The reports will be graded based on being factually correct,
documentation, well reasoned, organized, clear and concise.
