PROBLEMS FACED BY INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION
Research Report Guidelines
Length: 2500-3000 words (Not including excerpt of coded data or bibliography) This assignment presents the findings of the group research project undertaken throughout the semester. While the fieldwork will be undertaken as a group, this report will be undertaken as an individual piece of work. The assignment will be presented as a research report. Building on the Research Proposal assignment the assignment should outline the: • Title: indicating the topic of the study • Aims and Objectives: outlining the study’s main aims and the key research questions. • Literature Review: outlining what we know about the topic and what we do not; and therefore how your study contributes to knowledge. • Methodology: Outlining the actual research design and methods adopted, with justification for the methods used and reflections on the study’s limitations. You may find that through the process of conducting the fieldwork, you adapt what you have proposed in your initial Research Proposal. Social research is a messy process and the best-planned designs often have to change when confronted with ‘real world’ circumstances. The Research Report should therefore outline the actual processes adopted. As a rough guide this section should be approximately 750 words. • Presentation of findings: This should be an analytical presentation of your qualitative data, outlining the key themes that you have identified. It is not an expectation that the analysis will be definitive, as you will have far more data than you can actually use. However there should be some evidence of the use of qualitative data analysis techniques, and possibly of ‘grounded theory’ techniques. How did you make sense of these data? Are there any concepts or categories that explain what you have gathered? How does comparison illuminate them? While you may make use of the NVivo software program, this is not a requirement. • Discussion and Conclusions: In reflecting on your findings, how do they contribute to answering the research question? Does your analysis raise new questions and the need for other or different types of research? • Evaluation of Practical Experience: This should form an appendix to your report. This section should provide a critical evaluation of your research experience, including reflecting on the methods that you have used over the semester. In developing your critical reflections about your research experience, you might consider some of the following: What worked? What didn’t? Why do you think that this was so – a lack of ‘fit’ between method and research question, or something else? How did the questions that your research aimed to understand change, if at all? How did your experience ‘in the field’ cause you to reformulate your ideas about qualitative research? This section should be about 500 words. • Excerpt of ‘coded data’: Include a brief excerpt of coded data, illustrating your application of qualitative data analysis techniques. This will require you to transcribe a section, or selected sections of interview data, observation notes etc.. This should be no longer than a couple of paragraphs in length. • References: List any books, articles, reports, web sites etc. you have cited in the report………..
