Your primary objective is to respond to the movie in some context (or framework). So while I expect you to reflect personally, you will want to do so in relation to a context that “surrounds,” and gives meaning to, the movie you’re discussing. The readings, lecture notes, and the unit the film belongs to provide multiple contexts that may provide a framework for your personal responses. Were you to write on a movie from the realism unit, for instance, you could discuss how you feel the film conceives of and depicts realism, as well as its purpose. Same would apply to a movie from the Surrealism and Occupation units. For example, how is the movie surrealist for you and/or how does the movie’s surrealism make you respond and/or think or feel as a viewer? Given the brevity of this essay, I suggest narrowing your focus, rather than jumping around too much. Grounding your responses in one context is better than touching on three or four, for instance.
