What is the name of your hometown? (China, ShangHai)
Where is it located? Provide some detail here. (For example, in the case of my hometown of Burritts Rapids I wouldn’t just say “in Ontario”, I would say something like “along the Rideau Canal in Eastern Ontario, about one hour south of Ottawa”)
Provide a short, general description of the community’s geographical attributes (e.g. major landscape features, whether it’s an urban or rural centre, “located in an agricultural region”, etc.).
Find and provide a map showing the location of your hometown. (Be sure to cite where you found it.
Part B – Local Economy
What are the main economic functions of your hometown? Has this changed over time? If yes, why? If not, why not? (You don’t need to do extensive research here, but use your intuition as a human geographer to try explaining what’s been happening.)
What role would you say that economic globalization has played in shaping (for better or worse) the local economy of your hometown? Has this had any direct impact on you or members of your family (e.g. job loss, new job, job transfer, etc.)?
Part C – Local Population
What is the population of your hometown? Over time, has the population been increasing, decreasing or stagnating? What factors do you think might help to explain this trend?
Are there any demographic groups that are especially predominant (e.g., families with children, seniors)? Why do you think this is the case?
Part D – Land Use Planning and Transportation
Would you say your hometown is an automobile dependent place? Are there some parts that are more automobile dependent than others? Explain.
How vibrant is the downtown area of your hometown (if it has one)? Explain..
Part E – Place Promotion
Does your hometown try to convey a particular sense of place when promoting itself (e.g. on the municipal website, in its tourist brochures, etc.)? If so, do you feel that this is an accurate representation of what your community is really like? Explain.
Part F – Your Hometown and You
How have the characteristics of your hometown influenced your physical well-being, your lifestyle choices, and the opportunities available to you?
Thinking about your hometown as a whole, would you say your sense of place about this community is positive or negative? Explain why.
Guidelines
The written text in your paper should amount to 10 to 12 pages. This does not include any supporting materials, such as maps, tables and photographs.
Maps, statistical tables and any other supporting materials you include must be properly labelled and referenced.
You may use any commonly accepted style of referencing (e.g., APA, MLA), so long as it is used properly and consistently throughout your paper.
You should use headings and sub-headings for this paper rather than writing it as one long essay, but make sure to have an “Introduction” and a “Conclusion” section.
You may cite the textbook throughout this paper, but should also find at least three other sources of information (e.g., government documents, Census data, academic articles, etc.). A note about sources: Your three sources should consist of either primary sources (government documents, Census data etc.) or academic articles. This can include things like government websites (Stats Canada for instance). Please do not use blogs, newspaper articles, or other websites. Stick to academic articles and primary sources of information found either in hard copy or on the web.
