This short paper is designed to facilitate critical thinking. You are tasked with researching a
domestic policy/program and writing a brief on it. Your brief should be no longer than 1
page. It is important for you to consider both sides of the policy. In other words, why might
some be in favor of the issue? Why might some not agree with it? This assignment will
require some outside research.
The paper should answer the following questions (100 points possible):
A) Describe the policy/program. (20 points)
a. Include a brief history of the policy.
b. Who is the policy intended to affect?
c. Who is really affected by the policy?
B) Discuss the pros and cons of the policy. (20 points)
a. Why might some people be in favor of the law?
b. Why might some disagree with the law?
c. Is the policy achieving its intended consequences? How can you tell?
C) Take a stance on the issue. Propose a solution. (20 points)
a. How do you feel about the policy?
b. If you agree with it, how can it be made better? If you disagree with it, how
would you tweak it? Is it perfect as-is?
D) Conclusion (20 points)
a. Briefly summarize the policy and forecast how your stated fixes/tweaks
might make the policy better.
