Due Feb. 17, 2020
You will use this 3- 4 page paper (APA format for citations, Times New Roman,12 pt. font, double spaced) to critically analyze three films. You must include in your paper both films from class viewings, with the option to choose the other from the list provided or an approved alternative .The list of suggestions includes films that fit a theme of coming age stories and/or life transitions and how dominant culture, race, and stereotypes impact those moments/decisions and building community/family.
Films Viewed in Class
(Please use both films from class):
Get Out
Sorry to Bother You
Other Film Options:
Roman J. Israel
Quinceanera
Moonlight
Precious
Save the Last Dance
Guess Who
Spanglish
If there is a different film you would like to analyze, please ask. If the film fits the course themes you will be allowed to use it and it may be added to the list for future classes.
Explore and analyze themes, symbols and symbolic representations, stereotype expressions or contradictions, as well as genre and film styles. Describe the social context of the film (what does it say about society, and how do you think society has received or reacted to these films), and whatever else you find interesting or problematic about the films.
Use this handout to organize your thoughts while viewing the films as well as the Developing Critical thinking Notes on bblearn for your home viewing.
Please do not summarize each film. Think critically about the content and the context of the films and share your thoughts. Connect the thoughts you have on the films to course concepts and material when possible. The idea here is to get comfortable applying concepts from class discussions, lectures, and readings to pop culture, films, and your daily life.
