Unit 6 CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION (DRAWINGS, DETAILING, SPECIFICATIONS)

Assignment Tasks:

P5  Relate set of construction drawings to a specification (essential to pass)

There is no specification provided for the given FINCHLEY PRESCHOOL project. Therefore, please approach the task slightly differently. For example, what type of specification would be appropriate? Would this be provided on drawings or a separate document? How would the drawings relate to the specification?

Mention what sort of documents/drawings have been provided and whether they illustrate the proposal sufficiently.

P6 Evaluate construction drawings and details to detect ‘clashes’ (essential to pass)

Based on the given project (set of drawings), prepare a drawing comments schedule, to relate the project’s drawings to its specification & evaluate the information provided, highlighting any issues such as clarity, annotation, symbols  and particularly ‘clashes’ that will result in construction site issues.

In the context of a small project, this schedule could be as simple as ‘red-lining’ drawings; you need to have a look at the drawings and see what information is missing, what is wrong, what could be added on, what questions could be asked, etc. For example: wrong scale of the drawing, missing dimensions, unclear title, a potential site clash.

Adobe is the best place to mark up plans – ‘red-lining’ comments You can use Adobe Acrobat DC to do mark ups. It is fairly accessible and used by many people for this purpose. Examples of drawing comments schedule simple as ‘red-lining’ comments are provided.

It is then suggested to ‘printscreen’ extracts of specific drawings with ‘red-lining’ made by us & copy into the assignment as Figure 1, figure 2, etc., mentioning which drawings it ifrom & develop in the main body what is missing (I will then enclose full drawings as appendices, therefore please highlight which drawing the extract is taken from). This needs to be done, using ‘red-lining’ on drawings.

It can be something simple as: wrong scale, dimessions are missing, etc.

If you are unable, please write about clashes in the main body with drawing name in bracket, ideally copy in printscreen  with part of ordering where I need to mark up clashes myself. ..

Point M3

Annalise the construction information protocols, discuss best practise. This could be done by highlighting relevant standards, such as BS1192 or researching common methods within the industry.

Protocol methods for drawings , for example:

  • Marking up drawings (“red-lining”) to bring attention to issues, ask for clarification on an element, or advise that something should be rethought/ amended.
  • These markups could be manually referenced or digitally marked up – where a digital copy of the drawing (e.g. PDF) is marked up and linked to an attached list of “Requests for Information”.

Point P7 (essential to pass)

Assess the types of information produced by different/ participants in a construction project.

Point P8 (essential to pass)

Examine the relationship between different bodies of information and how they work in conjunction.

Point M4

Explain methods of providing drawings & information, both CAD & BIM. Compare each process, their roles & highlight differences in the actual information inputted and outputted.

Mention the clash detection software in BIM and CAD programs that is used to check draft plans for clashes.

P7, P8 & M4 can be put together to explain ways in which construction professionals collaborate in the production of construction project.  It is mainly to illustrate how BIM improves the collaboration, efficiency, detects clashes at early stages, etc.

Collaboration – principles behind that, which stem from earlier stages of design ( refer to the RIBA Plan of Work)
