In an increasingly globalised world, the aviation industry is becoming more

standardised and connected. There are commonalities in policies,

procedures and practices that cross the international boundaries. A good

working knowledge of the international framework provides an insight into the

day to day activities of the industry.

When an aircraft on an international flight leaves one State to fly to another,

possibly crossing other States along the way, there is a common support

framework that has been put in place by the ‘Chicago’ Convention

(including the creation of ICAO), the International Air Transport Association,

the contracting States to the ‘Chicago’ Convention, and the supra-national

regulators.

There is an underlying principle when it comes to safety is that if each

individual State is effectively oversighting the safety of its industry then the

global industry will be safe as a whole.
