This exercise has two parts. In the first part, we ask you to explore your reactions to the ideas just presented regarding supervision and therapy. Do you think it is important to explore the needs and self of the therapist? Do you have any hesitations or concerns about this process for yourself? How would you feel about addressing these issues in supervision, and how would you like your supervisor to deal with this issue? The second part of the exercise involves trying to identify any personal needs you are aware of that, if not managed well, could impede your functioning as a therapist. For example, you might consider your own needs for affection, approval, or power and ways in which these needs could knowingly or unknowingly influence your actions as a therapist. After thinking about these issues by yourself, consider discussing them with a peer, instructor, or supervisor.
