As a group or class discussion project, compare the cost of framing the exterior walls of the house as shown in exercise 6 by two methods: (1) Using 2 6s 16 o.c. and (2) using a double wall of 2 4s placed 12 in. apart. Discuss the cost difference between these two methods with respect to the amount of money that may be saved with the added insulation provided by the double-walled construction. What are some other reasons why one method might be better than the other? If the 2 6 method is used, how can the insulating qualities of that type of wall be improved?
Exercise 6
A building 30 ft by 52 ft, with 4 windows and one 3-ft door along one 52-ft wall, and 4 windows and one 8-ft sliding glass door along the other 52-ft wall. The 30-ft walls have 2 windows each. 2 6 studs are placed 16 o.c. a. Find the material needed for the shoe and double top plates. Provide an economical list of lengths and number of pieces. b. Find the number of studs. c. Determine the amount of 2 6s needed for door and window headers. d. Find the cost of materials in a, b, and c if 2 6s are priced at 58 cents per linear foot.
