Consider the conditions black Americans were facing from the 1890s through 1920. Then, analyze the contrasting philosophies and organizational approaches of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois. Viewing them in the context of the times their individual programs were advanced, what were the merits and drawbacks of each individual’s program? And, what aspect of each man’s program might or might not be useful to the circumstances black Americans face today. (Be sure to read and specifically reference documents like Booker T. Washington’s “Atlanta Exposition Address” and W.E.B. Du Bois’s “Niagara Movement Declaration of Principles,” “Of Mr. Washington and Others,” and/or “The Talented Tenth.” 3 to 6 pages
