One of the major hindrances I see in our local school system with our precious ELL students is the lack of parental involvement. I do not necessarily mean that the parents just do not get involved or take the opportunities they are given, but sometimes teachers do not make the necessary effort to connect to the parents. As a teacher, I believe we have the responsibility to treat parents the way we want to be treated as parents. In my experience, showing compassion is the best way to break down barriers.
