You are the leader of a small but successful cultural enterprise. You have a team of 20 who have been with you for between 1 and 7 years, and their ages range from between 21 to 55. You have no financial deficit, but only a small operating surplus. You earn approximately 50% of your income from your own enterprise, but depend on external funding for the rest, of which 40% comes from a single public source. You have been told that in six months’ time half of that 40% funding will cease. You have a range of options, including cutting back on activity and cutting back on staff.
As the leader:
- List your options
- Decide on a preferred option
- Decide how you will set about implementing it.
- Team Building
You have recently joined a medium-sized gallery in a medium-sized town. There are 14 members of staff doing things as varied as running the finances, curating the program, running an education program and managing the café-bar. In addition there are 20 part-time front of house gallery attendants. You notice that there is little communication between the different roles and most people have a sense of isolation – almost of achieving what they do in spite of everyone else. Make a plan of the short-, medium- and long-term things that can be done to improve the situation. Keep in mind issues such as power and authority as well as autonomy and purpose.
Each section should contain some theoretical context to help explain the choices you have made.
Assessment criteria:
- Application of theoretical concepts to case study
- Originality and insight of analysis
- Depth of analysis
- Demonstrated understanding of the issues
- Quality of written presentation (including spelling, grammar and punctuation)
- Appropriate referencing and bibliography
- Examples of readings beyond those on Reading on Line for the unit
- Evidence of the use of at least three (3) peer reviewed journals.
