Between 200 and2016, the US experienced remarkable changes internationally and domestically. By any measure, the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001, was a game-changer. With that, a long, still-ongoing “war on terror” began that meant military engagements overseas and increased domestic security measures. In 2008, remarkably, the US elected its first African American president, Barack Obama. He was elected to a second term in 2012.

Choose and discuss one of the following two topics related to American history under Presidents Bush and Obama:

  1. Discuss the Sept. 11 (2001) attack and its impact.
    • Describe what stands out to you (perhaps from memory) from the events of Sept. 11, 2001
    • Give two examples of events or changes since 9/11 that you attribute to that terrorist attack. In your view, what should we learn from this attack and our experiences trying to deal with it.
    • Identify the source(s) where you read about these free trade issues of that time.

The September 11th attack in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia would be something I would never forget.  I remember it like it was yesterday, I was in 8th grade at the time and I remember I was in my Social Studies class when we got the breaking news over the loudspeaker and we all rushed to turn on the school TV’s to watch the breaking news unfold.  We were all in shock and couldn’t believe that we were watching planes crash right into the World Trade Center. I also can remember the somber feeling that came over everyone that day and the shock and horror everyone felt watching people jump out of windows and the moment the buildings came crashing down.  It was a very eerie day and that’s why it will be a day I will never forget.

One significant change that came about after the 9/11 attacks were the changes to changes in air travel safety.  The enhancement for aviation security pushing the Transportation Security Administration budget from 4.8 billion in 2003 to nearly 7.8 billion dollars by the year 2020.  The increased security meant that all baggage would be checked for dangerous materials whereas before 9/11 on 5 percent of bags were screened.  There has also been a reduction in air travel amongst travelers since the 9/11 attacks.  According to a poll, one out of six Americans have said they have reduced air travel.
