2. Tasks
Literature review on energy efficient buildings and options to reduce noise, save energy and have less impact on the environment resulting in a building contributing to better health, comfort and well-being.
Select an individual building in the campus of the Bradford University and find some key features of the selected building, such as the shape/structure types, dimensions, construction materials, direction, outside environment and views, inside arrangement etc. (first visit). You may use a Google/bing map to find the basic shape and get using “Google Maps Area Calculator Tools” general knowledge of windows, doors and floor height dimensions. To measure the building one can find tools online or use one of the tools listed below:

http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-area-calculator-tool.htm
Onsite visits, investigation and data collection to check some information you have got online. Measure the temperature, humidity, noise levels inside and outside of the building. Measure the wind speed and identify the wind direction. View the structural features and construction material used. View the inside space arrangement and outside environment. You may have multiple onsite visits to collect/build you selected building database.
Calculate and analyse the energy loss of walls, windows, doors, ceilings and floor considering traditional construction materials or the ones you have seen during your site visits). For these calculations, only calculate the heat loss for the walls that are exposed to environment.
Find the degree days for your selected building area and apply these for the annual heating energy requirement calculation. You may use the Degree days database as following:

Perform the building environmental analysis based on orientation and location of the selected building. You may wish to consider the following factors: house orientation, wind, shade, noise, temperature, factories nearby, geographical location, rounding environment, building structural material, inside environment and arrangement etc.
Based on the building environmental analysis you need to consider energy saving improvements and noise reduction. The Improvement design need to cover at least 4 of the following aspects if you group has 5 members:
Thermal Insulation
Solar and photovoltaic panels
Windows solar shading
Noise reduction
Heat recovery systems
Double or Triple glazing
Green roof
Heat pump
Grey water
Waste recycle
Biomass boiler

Water saving
Wind turbine
Outside greenery
