Week 10 Discussion 1:

Respond to the colleagues posts regarding the following

“Characterizing Data Types” Please respond to the following:

·  Justify characterizing data types according to task taxonomy. Support your response.

·  Assess the value to an interface designer, of being familiar with the seven basic tasks and create an argument for which three of the seven basic tasks are the most important to incorporate in a design.

NM’s post states the following:

Justify characterizing data types according to task taxonomy. Support your response.

Assess the value to an interface designer, of being familiar with the seven basic tasks and create an argument for which three of the seven basic tasks are the most important to incorporate in a design.

With larger quantities of data and more complex volumes there is a need to characterize the data types. Business analyst needed a way to process these quantities of data as well as show images of this data to others. Imagery was used to describe this data is essential in helping the user understand the data more easily. Imagery is easier to read than the typical text document. Visual displays provide a dynamic context or feedback that show a visualization of changes within the data.

Using taxonomy designer’s data would present imagery that would show and overview, zoom, filer, details on demand, relate, history and extract. Users will take this taxonomy to compare or contrast data.

Assess the value to an interface designer, of being familiar with the seven basic tasks and create an argument for which three of the seven basic tasks are the most important to incorporate in a design.

The three most important tasks that I would consider would be filter, details-on-demand and zoom. With the details-on-demand items are trimmed down and accessed with a click to a pop- up window that will provide htm links to access additional information. Details-on-demand can communicate by using a heading or a navigation bar.

Zoom is another task that users can click on to adjust the size of the field or enlarge it. Zooming allows users see data in a comfortable view that is specific to the individual. With zooming users can pan into a specific item or image to see larger imagery.

Week 10 Discussion 2:

Respond to the colleagues posts regarding the following

“Information Visualization” Please respond to the following:

·  Despite increases in computing power and network bandwidth, many user interfaces are still largely text oriented, with a few icons and illustrations. Discuss at least three reasons why text-oriented interfaces are still the most common.

·  From the e-Activity, identify the tool you would be most likely to use in a design project and explain why you selected it.

NJ’s post states the following:

Despite increases in computing power and network bandwidth, many user interfaces are still largely text oriented, with a few icons and illustrations. Discuss at least three reasons why text-oriented interfaces are still the most common.

According to admin-magazine.com (2020), administration tools are the primary users of TUIs. Most Expert users normally don’t use TUI, but prefer GUI. TUI is a valuable tool and readily available for training novice users for frequently changing interfaces among software.

Text-based interface (TUI) is knowledge in the mind, you must know the commands and objects to enter. GUI-based is knowledge in the world the user must find objects and commands on the screen to click. Text-based interface usage can be learn over a short period of time and develop an intimate knowledge of the commands and objects available.

The TUI library can be used with Python and Bash called dialog, which you can use to create pop-up dialog boxes from Bash scripts. Dialog has been rolled into a Python library named pythondialog that allows you to use dialog boxes and other constructs from the dialog library in your Python code.

– From the e-Activity, identify the tool you would be most likely to use in a design project and explain why you selected it.

According to openaccess.city.ac.uk, the information visualization design ‘user-centered’ techniques of prototyping plays an important role in the early stage of the design process of problem domain assessment. Prototyping is essential to increase users’ awareness of what information visualization techniques which enable users to participate more effectively in later stages of the design and development process, and acts as a stimulus for engagement.

According to dl.acm.org HCI study describes an emerging research method called Multi-dimensional In-depth Long-term Case studies (MILCs) that adapts users of information visualization systems creative activities. They propose that the efficacy of tools can be assessed by documenting 1) usage (observations, interviews, surveys, logging etc.) and 2) expert users’ success in achieving their professional goals.
