Post: Christian values play an important role in business ethics, not to mention ethics in general. The foundation of Christianity is deeply rooted in what is right or wrong. In the Old Testament the ten commandments provide a listing of moral duties, many of which regard human rights. In the New Testament, the golden rule is stated that others should be treated as we would want to be treated ourselves (Melé & Fontrodona, 2017). Because Christianity is about caring for and serving one another rather than oneself, the Thomas Aquinas’ moral virtues of faith, hope, and charity can be added to Aristotle’s of courage, temperance, justice, and prudence (V elasquez, 2018). These ideas can easily be translated into the handling of ethics in business. When trying to determine the morally correct course of action it is important for a manger to put themselves in the shoes of the people who will be affected. Making decisions from a Christian point of view can not only positively impact the employees, but also positively impact the company. Mutual trust built on the pillars of ability, benevolence, and integrity can positively impact a high-performance work system (Yoon-Ho, Dong-One & Ali, 2015). When employees are working in an environment that makes them feel respected and valued, they are more likely to work harder and stay with the company. It can also make the company more enticing for highly skilled and talented employees to join. Ultimately, these are the result of the management of a company doing what is considered morally right by putting the needs of their employees ahead of thei r own.
