This project is about Bryton Cycle (the basic cycle for Gas Turbine engine). Consider a gas turbine engine that operates on the basis of Bryton cycle. The isentropic efficiency of the turbine and compressor is 85% and 80%, respectively. The air flow rate is 40 kg/s                      the temperature in the inlet of the compressor is 25 oC.

Use the EES software to do the performance analysis of the cycle according to the following description:

1- The pressure at the inlet and exit of the turbine are 1500 kPa and 100 kPa, respectively.

2- Ignore pressure loss due to friction in heat exchangers(isentropic).

3- Change the temperature at the inlet of the turbine different times (repeat the caclulations at least 4 times by changing inlet turbine temperature in a range from 800 oC to                 1300 oC) (for example 800 ,1000 ,1100,1300 all in Celsius )

For the above conditions calculate:

  • The power input to the compressor and power output from the turbine.
  • The rate of heat input and output to the cycle.
  • The thermal efficiency of the cycle.
  • The rate of exergy destruction for each component in the cycle.
  • The total rate of exergy destruction of the whole cycle and the percentage of that exergy loss in each component.
  • The second law efficiency of the cycle.

PLOT all the above results as a function of the 4 different  temperature of  the turbines  inlet in x-axis and the power out(turbine),power in (compressor), Q in(heat exchanger) (KW) ,       Q out(heat exchanger) (KW) in the y-axis using EES. And find the answers of the above questions using EES( so we will have 4 different graphs for each temperature in total 16 graphs)

And solve the above questions using one of the 4 temperature using calculations show the calculation in detailed steps.

Preparation of the report:

1- Write your report in the usual way and include (briefly); (Note: part of the grade will be given to the quality of the report):

  • Cover page that includes all details needed (Name of University with appropriate logos; name of the course and its code and number and your names and ID numbers, as well as name of course instructor)
  • Abstract (Executive Summary).
  • Introduction (you need to give some background the Bryton cycle and the gas turbine engine). You may refer to your book or any other relevant reference.
  • Briefly give the scope of the project and the problem statement and task to be done.
  • Give a section for the mathematical formulation: You need to give the equations that model your system. Not only listing of the equations, but also you need to mention the purpose of each equation.
  • Fro the equations edit them clearly and in a neat way. Give each equation a number
  • Put some brief comments and discussions on the obtained results and try to relate the discussion to the background you already got in the class based on the theoretical material you studied.
  • Come up with final conclusions based on your results and indicate the things you have learned from this experience

Put some references. For example, you may refer to some information in your book or in the lecture notes or others (e.g. websites, etc.). No need to give huge number of references. This is only an exercise for you on how to do report some do it brief, but good.

  • Make sure your report looks neat and well organized

. · Make sure you do not put a Figure without giving it a figure number and caption that describes its content. Also make sure you refer to the Figures in the main body of the report in places in the report before you put the figure.

  • Make sure that you cite the references in the report (not only list them at the end).
  • You need to put a listing of the EES code that you used in the appendix at the end of the report. You need also to mention in the report that you used EEEs in your project.

This might take about 45 slides if you’re using power point  but don’t limit yourself if you need more and  when saving the plots from EES go to plots save as picture.
