Instructions for Oxidation States of Manganese Lab

  1. Assemble your materials on the workbench:
    • Bottle KMnO4(s)
    • Flask 10 M H2SO3(aq)
    • Flask 10 M NaOH(aq)
    • 4 × Flasks 10 M NaHSO3(aq)
    • 4 × 600 mL beakers
    • Carboy of ddH2O(l)
  2. In a 600 mL beaker, create an aqueous solution of 0.01 M KMnO4(aq)(be sure to explain how this is done and show your calculations in the materials and methods section). Right click on the beaker and select rename. Rename it “0.01 M KMnO4(aq)”. Record your observations for this solution.
  3. To each of three other 600 mL beakers, add 100 mL of the KMnO4(aq)
  4. Label one of the beakers, ‘acidified,’ the second beaker ‘basified,’ and the third beaker ‘control.’
  5. Pour 100 mL of the 0.01 M solution of KMnO4(aq)into each of the beakers.
  6. To the beaker marked ‘acidified’ add 100 mL of 10 M H2SO3(aq)and 100 mL of 10 M NaHSO3(aq) Note the colour of each solution before adding it, and the colour of the final mixture.
  7. To the beaker marked ‘basified’ add 100 mL of 10 M NaOH(aq)and 10 M NaHSO3(aq) Note the colour of the original solutions as well as the final mixure.
  8. To the beaker marked ‘control’ add 200 mL of 10 M NaHSO3(aq) Note once again the colour of the original solution and of the final mixture.
  9. Record any observations that you think are relevant — qualitative and quantitative – on the concentrations and pH. Remember to use the panel to the side for aqueous species data, and remember to click on “Solid” and note the mass of any solid species that may have evolved.
