To provide an opportunity for students to synthesize the course lectures, screenings and readings in a structured fashion. Writing a research paper is an intellectual exercise that will allow students to strengthen not only their research and writing skills but also their critical and analytic abilities.
Write a paper on one course film (on syllabus or shown in class) by focusing on one theme below. Your paper must answer this question: What aspects of Hong Kong society, culture, politics, or economy, does the film under study expose, critique, and reconfigure? Your paper may focus on either one film or on two films (in which case it will be a comparative essay). The second film can be a film not screened in class. If you wish, you may choose a film that hasn’t been covered in class. In that case, you need to get the instructor’s approval. You may also wish to write your final paper on your presentation film.
