Upon successful completion of the unit, the student will be able to:
1) evaluate the role of project management in a modern business environment
2) demonstrate understanding of project data, the relevance of documentation and the construction of an effective project management culture to support a successful project strategy
3) quantify and assess project parameters and resources, whether material, financial and human so as to achieve project objectives
4) evaluate the contribution of wider issues, such as quality management and risk assessment, in a project environment
5) identify appropriate improvement techniques for project management, such as new product development, team leadership, review and audit.
Learning and Teaching Strategy
Generally, there will be a one-hour lecture accompanied by a one-hour seminar each week. Lectures will provide students with information, conceptual frameworks, and problem areas. The lecture syllabus is intended to review a full range of current issues, some of which will be examined in greater detail in the seminars.
Unsupervised activity will include reading the material introduced in lectures, and applying the concepts. The key topic areas discussed in the lecture serve to shape the structure of the students’ learning.
The lectures provide a context for the material in the textbooks and elsewhere. Appropriate examples of contemporary project management could be given by visiting speakers. Students will be expected to undertake the background reading, address the seminar questions and prepare for the assessment. To achieve the biggest value from the seminar process, it is logically anticipated that all students will be coming fully prepared every week, be it pre-reading, watching videos or webinars or any other required homework.
The module’s teaching and learning programme will include group work, case studies, exercises and group presentations.
