Describe language development in young children. How does this relate to literacy development? How does an early childhood teacher show that a child’s bilingual and bicultural world is respected?  A new student to a classroom of four-year-olds recently arrived from Honduras and speaks virtually no English. Although he listens to and watches everything going on around him, he says nothing for days. Is this fairly normal behavior for a child in his situation? What strategies should his teacher pursue in helping him?
