1.In small groups, develop two case studies: one related to a patient with a grade II anterior talofibular ligament sprain; the other, a patient with a displaced bimalleolar fracture. In each case develop a criterion-based rehabilitation program (critical pathway or mapping) that follows the maximum-, moderate-, and minimum-protection phase concepts of progression. Be certain to apply your understanding of the mechanisms of soft-tissue and bone healing and the three general phases of the inflammatory response, repair phase, and remodeling of tissues during each protective phase of recovery. Be specific in identifying the appropriate, safe, and effective use of agents to control pain and swelling. List exercises, activities, weight bearing status, muscle contraction types, open versus closed kinetic chain exercises, general physical conditioning, ROM, cardiovascular fitness, balance-coordination-proprioception, and functional activities that are consistent with each phase of healing.
