Agent represents basketball players Williams and Smith, who play for different teams in the same NBA conference. Williams, who is considered by many to be the greatest basketball player of all time, is also the highest-paid athlete (salary and endorsements) in the world. One of Williams’s teammates complains about the aggressive play of Smith, who is a solid player but not a superstar. Williams takes these complaints to Agent, who is currently in the midst of negotiating Smith’s contract with his current team, Team A. Team B has also expressed an interest in Smith. Agent rejects Team A’s offer of $8.1 million for three years and secures for Smith a $9.6 million deal with Team B, which plays in another NBA conference. Under his contract with Team B, Smith will receive only $6.4 million in his first three years. Agent says that the deal with Team B is better because it will pay Smith $3.2 million ($1.5 million of which is guaranteed) in his fourth year and has less deferred money. Team A’s president says that Team A was willing to compromise on the issue of deferred money. What, if any, conflicts or potential conflicts are present here?
