Guidelines:
A SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) is a useful tool for aiding
understanding, strategy formulation, planning and decision-making involving many different situations
affecting businesses and organisations. A SWOT analysis is widely used inplanning and evaluation for a
project or business venture, in identifying areas for development, andin crisis planning. For our
purposes, this SWOT analysis involves a study of the strengths and weaknesses of an industry or
organisation (this involves mostly internal factors), and the opportunities and threats/challenges which
the industry or organisation faces (mostly external factors). It is precisely the sort of exercise one might
undertake when thinking about developing a career in a particular industry or organisation!
You will have to make choices about the factors and indicators which you examine whenit comes to
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. You should look to several factors/indicators only
(perhaps 3) in each of these respects, certainly not too manyotherwise your study will be superficial
and cursory. Think about what is most pertinent, butobviously you will also need to take into account
what is available or accessible.
