List the features of a bureaucracy in health care. Link these features with the disempowering experiences of a consumer. This may not be limited to the mental health environment, so consider the situation of consumers of health services across a broad range, and then think about what features may be common to mental health services as well. Examine commonly prescribed mental health medications for their sedative side-effects. How can these effects be used to enhance recovery, or minimised to avoid over-sedation? Consider the term ‘negative symptoms’. What are these? How can they influence a mental health consumer’s recovery? What strategies may be developed to ameliorate them?
