1. Describe a current example you have witnessed of attributing human behavior to a “bizarre” and unscientific explanation from common culture? 2. What is the difference between an analysis of behavior and an experimental analysis of behavior? Why is it important for a clinician to understand the difference? 3. How is a reward or incentive, different from reinforcement? What makes a reinforcer effective for one person and not for another? Give an example of a reinforcer that may be effective for one person but not another. 4. How is a behavior analyst’s definition of culture different from the typical definition? How can selection by consequences happen at the cultural level? Give an example of a cultural norm and how its shaping could be explained using behavior analysis. 5. Describe the law of effect in your own words. How is the law of effect discussed differently now than it was when Thorndike first stated it? 6. Briefly state one contributions of Pavlov, Watson, and Thorndike (each) to Skinner’s field of behavior analysis and how they affect psychology today. Contrast these contributions with Skinner’s new (at the time) theory of operant behavior. 7. Summarize the assumptions of behavior analysis described in the Pierce and Cheney text and briefly describe how they differ from other common sciences (e.g., cognitive psychology). 8. Describe how psychology broke from philosophy. How did this help to pave the way to a more objective branch of psychology such as behavior analysis? How did objective and comparative psychology play a role in this evolution of our science? 9. Why was introspection abandoned as a method? Can you describe examples today of how we still use methods like “introspection” to prove our own arguments in our everyday experiences and the effects of not using more objective measures? In other words, think of examples of when we use personal examples, or self-reports of experiences, or references to immeasurable private events that we use to explain behavior in everyday life. How does this method affect how our explanations are accepted/valued by others? 10. What is wrong with using terms like mind and consciousness in our explanations of behavior?
